The Basics of Poker

Poker has become very popular over the past decade. The advent of online play and television broadcasts have brought in huge audiences. While luck has a large role in any game, poker relies on considerable skill as well.

Poker is usually played with chips. Each player starts with a fixed number of chips. The first player to the left of the dealer makes a bet by placing one or more chips into the pot. Each player to his or her left has the option to “call” that bet by putting in the same amount of chips, or to raise it by placing more into the pot than what was raised before. Players can also choose to “drop” (fold), which means they discard their hand and exit the betting round.

Once the betting round is complete the dealer puts a third card on the table that anyone can use, called the flop. Once again everyone has the opportunity to bet, check, raise or fold.

If you hold a premium opening hand, like an Ace-King or Queens, you should bet aggressively early on. If you don’t, the other players will know what you have and will probably raise before you can get your money in. You should always mix it up at the table by raising sometimes and checking often. This will help disguise the strength of your hands and make it much harder for opponents to pick up on bluffs.
